What is your pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that span the bottom of the pelvis. These muscles form a hammock-like structure that supports the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus (in women), prostate (in men), and rectum. The pelvic floor muscles attach from the pubic bone in the front to the tailbone at the back, and from one sitting bone to the other, forming a supportive sling.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy aims to assess and treat the muscles in and around the pelvis to improve overall function. Treatment is individualized and can include manual therapy, corrective exercises, and lifestyle modifications

A unique part of pelvic floor assessment and treatment is the internal exam. An internal exam of the pelvic floor muscles allows the physiotherapist to determine if the pelvic floor is weak or strong, tight or lacking tension, or symmetrical or asymmetrical. An internal exam is not a mandatory part of treatment, however it does provide a unique window into pelvic floor function that is otherwise inaccessible.
During the initial visit, your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your condition. They will also perform an external exam of not only your pelvic floor, but also posture, range of motion, and core strength. You and your physiotherapist will decide if an internal exam is appropriate at that time, so the pelvic floor function can be better assessed and treated.
Individuals experiencing urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, postnatal recovery, pelvic organ prolapse, and conditions like interstitial cystitis or pudendal neuralgia can benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy.
The frequency of sessions depends on your individual condition and treatment plan. Typically, sessions may start weekly and then gradually decrease as your condition improves.

While some techniques may cause mild discomfort, pelvic floor physiotherapy is generally not painful. The therapist will work within your comfort level to ensure a positive experience.

What types of massage therapy are offered at Optimize Ottawa?
At Optimize Ottawa, we offer deep tissue massage, sports massage, and therapeutic massage. Each type is designed to address specific needs such as muscle tightness, performance enhancement, and stress relief.
Deep tissue massage helps relieve chronic muscle pain, tightness, and trigger points. It uses slow strokes and deep pressure to treat deep muscle layers and connective tissue, breaking up scar tissue and promoting healing.
Our services include one-on-one treatment with experienced therapists, longer appointments, and a focus on movement and mobility. We use state-of-the-art equipment and a team-based approach, collaborating with sports medicine and physiotherapy professionals.
Regular sports massages increase flexibility, reduce soreness, and lower the risk of injury. They help maintain healthy tissues and enhance performance, especially for individuals engaged in high-intensity activities.
